Among the opponents of the administration proposals were as Republicans or Democrats. Of the Republicans "for" votes in 65 people, "against" - 133. The voting Democrats were divided as follows: "Yes" - 140 votes "against" - 95.
The plan Paulson suggested the allocation of 700 billion dollars budget for buying illiquid assets. The aim of the plan was a recapitalization of the banking system and support the U.S. mortgage market, which was the root cause of financial crisis.
The stock market reacted to the failure of the project sharp fall in quotations. Dow Jones index fell by 4.75 per cent, while the broad market index S & P 500 - at 6.01 percent. Immediately after publishing the results of the ballot Dow Jones fell by 6.3 percent.
The price of oil also fell, dropping by the end of the session on the exchange NYMEX at 9.14 dollars to 97.75 dollars per barrel. At the same time, gold went up by 17.6 dollars to 912 dollars a troy ounce.
